Christchurch's New Central Library

Here is what the New Central Library in Cathedral Square will look like when it opens in 2018.
The design was inspired by the Canterbury landscape and feedback from the public on what they wanted in the new building.
The facade echoes the warm colours and shadows of the Port Hills and the triangular leaves of the native harakeke flax that once grew in swamps around the site.
The 2,400 ideas received during the last year’s Your Library, Your Voice campaign had a big influence on plans for the $85 million building which is expected to open in 2018.
Along with digital, specialist and print collections the Central Library will have a cafe, 200-seat community arena, exhibition space, outdoor terraces, and areas for families, children and youth.
